Causes of Foot Pain
Foot pain can result from various conditions, including sinus tarsi syndrome, tendonitis, and claw toe. Sinus tarsi syndrome occurs when the sinus tarsi, which is a small cavity in the ankle, becomes inflamed, causing pain on the outside of the foot, especially after long periods of walking or standing. Tendonitis, another common cause of foot pain, is the inflammation of the tendons, often due to overuse or injury. This can result in pain along the top or bottom of the foot and difficulty moving the foot. Claw toe is a deformity where the toes bend downward, causing pain and difficulty walking, often linked to muscle imbalances or wearing ill-fitting shoes. These conditions can be caused by activities that stress the feet, poor footwear, or underlying medical issues. Visiting a podiatrist is key to an accurate diagnosis and treatment, which may include targeted exercises, custom orthotics, or even surgery, in severe cases. If you are experiencing foot pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

- And more
Diagnosis
To figure out the cause of foot pain, podiatrists utilize several different methods. This can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

Causes of a Broken Pinky Toe
A broken pinky toe typically occurs due to trauma or injury, such as stubbing the toe on furniture, dropping something heavy on the foot, or participating in high-impact sports. The force from these events can cause the bone to crack or break. Symptoms of a broken pinky toe include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the toe. In some cases, the toe may appear misaligned. Treatment for a broken pinky toe usually involves rest and elevation to reduce swelling. A buddy taping method, where the injured toe is taped to the adjacent toe for stability, may be used. In more severe cases, where the toe is significantly displaced, a podiatrist may need to realign the bones or, in rare cases, use a cast. If you have fractured your pinky toe, it is suggested that you contract a podiatrist who can offer you effective treatment remedies.
A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.
What to Know About a Broken Toe
Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).
Symptoms of a Broken Toe
- Throbbing pain
- Swelling
- Bruising on the skin and toenail
- The inability to move the toe
- Toe appears crooked or disfigured
- Tingling or numbness in the toe
Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.
Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.

Understanding Athlete's Foot
Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet, often between the toes. It is caused by a group of fungi known as dermatophytes, which thrive in warm, moist environments. The infection occurs when the fungi come into contact with the skin, leading to symptoms such as itching, redness, peeling, and sometimes blisters. Athlete's foot is extremely contagious and can spread through direct contact with an infected person or contaminated surfaces, such as public showers, locker rooms, and pools. Wearing tight shoes, sweaty socks, or walking barefoot in damp areas increases the risk of developing the infection. Individuals with weakened immune systems or poor foot hygiene are also more susceptible. If you have symptoms of athlete’s foot, it is suggested that you promptly contact a podiatrist who can offer you effective treatment methods, which may include prescribed medication.
Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.
Athlete’s Foot: The Sole Story
Athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis, can be an extremely contagious foot infection. It is commonly contracted in public changing areas and bathrooms, dormitory style living quarters, around locker rooms and public swimming pools, or anywhere your feet often come into contact with other people.
Solutions to Combat Athlete’s Foot
- Hydrate your feet by using lotion
- Exfoliate
- Buff off nails
- Use of anti-fungal products
- Examine your feet and visit your doctor if any suspicious blisters or cuts develop
Athlete’s foot can cause many irritating symptoms such as dry and flaking skin, itching, and redness. Some more severe symptoms can include bleeding and cracked skin, intense itching and burning, and even pain when walking. In the worst cases, Athlete’s foot can cause blistering as well. Speak to your podiatrist for a better understanding of the different causes of Athlete’s foot, as well as help in determining which treatment options are best for you.

What Causes a Bunion?
A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, where it angles toward the second toe. This condition occurs when the bones in the front of the foot shift out of alignment, causing the big toe to lean inward. Over time, the misalignment leads to the formation of a prominent bump on the joint. Symptoms of bunions include pain, swelling, redness, and the development of calluses or corns where the toes rub against the shoe. The pain can worsen with prolonged standing or walking. Common causes of bunions include genetics, wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes, and excessive pressure on the feet. Conditions like arthritis or flat feet can also contribute to the development of bunions. While bunions may be managed with conservative treatments, surgery may be needed for severe cases to restore normal foot function and alleviate pain. If you have symptoms of a bunion, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can guide you toward treatment methods that are right for you.
If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact one of our podiatrists of Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is a Bunion?
Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.
Causes
- Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
- Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development
Symptoms
- Redness and inflammation
- Pain and tenderness
- Callus or corns on the bump
- Restricted motion in the big toe
In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

Understanding Common Peroneal Nerve Dysfunction
Common peroneal nerve dysfunction is a condition where damage to the peroneal nerve leads to weakness, numbness, or loss of movement in the lower leg and foot. The peroneal nerve branches from the sciatic nerve and controls muscles responsible for lifting the foot and toes. Dysfunction in this nerve can cause foot drop, making it difficult to lift the foot when walking. Causes include direct trauma, prolonged pressure on the nerve, knee injuries, or underlying conditions like diabetes. Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, nerve conduction studies, and imaging to assess nerve health and identify any underlying issues. Treatment depends on the severity and may involve targeted exercises to strengthen muscles, braces or splints to support the foot, and in some cases, surgery to relieve pressure on the nerve. Early diagnosis and intervention are essential for optimal recovery and preventing long-term complications. If you have symptoms as described, it is strongly suggested that you visit a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Rare Foot Conditions
The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist. Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.
There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:
- Freiberg’s disease
- Kohler’s disease
- Maffucci syndrome
Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.
Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.
Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.
A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.
